Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco – Piscacucho (Km 82) – Patallacta – Tarayoc – Wayllabamba (Easy Day)

We begin the day with an early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 AM, followed by a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 hours to Piscacucho (Km 82)—the official starting point of the Inca Trail.

Upon arrival, you will meet your porters and cook, and prepare for the hike. After a brief orientation, we begin our trek with a short 10-minute walk to the Inca Trail checkpoint, where you’ll show your passport and permit.

Next, we cross a suspension bridge over the Urubamba River and begin a gradual ascent through beautiful Andean landscapes. After about 2 hours, we reach Miskay (2,800 m / 9,186 ft), a small rest point where we’ll stop to relax and hydrate.

We continue for about 45 more minutes to reach the Patallacta viewpoint (2,850 m / 9,350 ft), from where you can admire one of the largest and most impressive archaeological sites on the trail. Patallacta was once a key agricultural and administrative center for Inca travelers en route to Machu Picchu.

From the viewpoint, we continue another 1 hour to Tarayoc (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where a nutritious lunch awaits.

In the afternoon, we ascend gently through native flora and rural landscapes for about 3 more hours until we reach Wayllabamba (3,000 m / 9,842 ft)—a small Andean village nestled in a scenic valley. Here, we’ll set up camp for the night, enjoy a hearty dinner, and rest in preparation for the more challenging day ahead.

This day is ideal for acclimatization and offers your first taste of Inca history, mountain scenery, and life on the trail.

  • Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
  • Starting altitude (Km 82): 2,700 m / 8,858 ft
  • Maximum altitude (Wayllabamba): 3,000 m / 9,842 ft
  • Approximate hiking time: 6–7 hours
  • Difficulty level: Easy to moderate

We begin early with a nourishing breakfast at camp before starting our steady uphill trek. The trail ascends gradually for about 1.5 hours to Ayapata (3,300 m / 10,827 ft), a peaceful rest spot nestled in a forested area. From here, we continue climbing for another 1.5 hours to Llulluchapampa (3,850 m / 12,631 ft), where we’ll take a break and admire the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

From Llulluchapampa, we face the most strenuous section: the ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca)—the highest point of the entire trail at 4,215 m / 13,828 ft. This steep climb takes about 2 hours and challenges even seasoned hikers, due to the altitude and rugged terrain. Once at the top, take time to rest, celebrate your accomplishment, and take photos of the dramatic panoramic landscape.

Next, we descend for about 2 hours along a stone-paved path to reach our second campsite at Pacaymayo (3,600 m / 11,811 ft). Upon arrival, enjoy a well-earned lunch and free time to rest and recover. Around 7:00 PM, dinner will be served, followed by a well-deserved night’s sleep after a physically demanding but incredibly rewarding day.

Throughout the day, you’ll pass through a variety of ecosystems—from high Andean grasslands (puna) to cloud forest—and traverse landscapes that make this one of the most unforgettable days of the Inca Trail.

  • Distance: 11 km / 6.8 miles
  • Starting altitude (Wayllabamba): 3,000 m / 9,842 ft
  • Highest point (Dead Woman’s Pass): 4,215 m / 13,828 ft
  • Camp altitude (Pacaymayo): 3,600 m / 11,811 ft
  • Approximate hiking time: 7–8 hours
  • Difficulty level: Challenging

This day is widely considered the most scenic and culturally enriching of the Inca Trail. After an early breakfast, we begin a moderate uphill trek for about 1.5 hours to reach the Runkurakay archaeological site, followed by the second mountain pass at 3,950 m / 12,959 ft. From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Vilcabamba mountain range and the surrounding cloud forest.

We then descend to the impressive Sayacmarca, known as the “Inaccessible Town.” This fascinating site features intricate stone architecture and ceremonial structures perched dramatically on a ridge.

Continuing along a beautifully preserved section of the Inca Trail, we pass through stone-paved paths, tunnels, and lush vegetation as we make our way to Chaquicocha, where we’ll take a short rest and enjoy lunch.

The journey continues with a gentle ascent to Phuyupatamarca (“Town Above the Clouds”), one of the most stunning and best-preserved sites on the trail. This location provides breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and the Aobamba River basin.

We then begin a long descent via ancient Inca stairways through subtropical forest, arriving at Intipata, a spectacular agricultural complex with dramatic terraces overlooking the valley.

Finally, we reach Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), our last campsite. Here, you can relax, explore the nearby ceremonial site, and reflect on your incredible journey so far.

In the evening, enjoy a special farewell dinner and say goodbye to the porters and cooks who have supported you along the way. Rest up—tomorrow, Machu Picchu awaits.

  • Distance: 16 km / 10 miles
  • Starting altitude (Pacaymayo): 3,600 m / 11,811 ft

  • Camp altitude (Wiñay Wayna): 2,650 m / 8,694 ft
  • Approximate hiking time: 8–9 hours
  • Difficulty level: Moderate

Your final day begins very early, around 4:00 AM, as we aim to reach Intipunku (the Sun Gate) just in time to witness sunrise over Machu Picchu—a once-in-a-lifetime moment. After breakfast and passing the final checkpoint, we hike for about 1.5 to 2 hours along a relatively gentle trail, surrounded by lush vegetation and breathtaking views.

Arriving at Intipunku, you’ll get your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu in the golden morning light. This is a deeply emotional and rewarding sight after days of trekking along ancient Inca paths.

We then descend gradually toward the citadel itself, taking time to enjoy the surrounding scenery and snap your first close-up photos. At the entrance, you’ll have the opportunity to store your backpack and use restrooms before starting your guided tour.

Your professional guide will lead a 2 to 3-hour tour through the most important sectors of Machu Picchu, including temples, plazas, agricultural terraces, ceremonial fountains, and more. You’ll learn about the rich history, spiritual significance, and architectural genius of this Wonder of the World.

After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore on your own or hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (if reserved in advance).

In the afternoon, we take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have time for lunch (not included) before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival, our private transportation will be waiting to drive you back to Cusco, dropping you off at San Francisco Square, arriving in the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between the Short Inca Trail and the Classic Inca Trail?
