Itinerary
DAY 1: Welcome to Peru – Arrival in Lima
Welcome to Peru! Upon arrival at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport, a representative will be waiting to greet your family and transfer you to your hotel in the city. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to explore the vibrant Miraflores district, enjoy a relaxing walk along the coastal cliffs, or simply rest and get ready for the adventure ahead. Overnight in Lima.
DAY 2: From Lima to the Jungle – Welcome to Tambopata
At the indicated time, we will transfer you to the Lima airport to board your flight to Puerto Maldonado, deep in the lowlands of the Amazon Rainforest.
Upon arrival, we will travel by motorized canoe along the Madre de Dios River to reach our comfortable and exclusive lodge nestled in the Tambopata National Reserve. This region holds the world record for bird species sightings in a single area.
Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a boxed lunch during the boat ride or lunch upon arrival at the lodge. Rubber boots will be provided for your excursions.
In the afternoon, join a guided walk led by expert naturalists to discover the surrounding rainforest and observe wildlife in nearby lakes or canopy towers. During the river journey, you may spot black skimmers, lapwings, great egrets, jabiru storks, roadside hawks, and various species of kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers.
Enjoy your first sunset in the Amazon before settling into the lodge for a restful night in the heart of the jungle.
DAY 3: Lake Sandoval Exploration – Night Walk in the Rainforest
After breakfast, we will begin a 3-kilometer walk through the dense rainforest to reach Lake Sandoval, one of the largest and most biodiverse lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. Upon arrival, we will board a paddle canoe to explore the lake’s calm waters and observe an impressive variety of wildlife.
During our excursion, we may encounter numerous bird species such as the hoatzin, cormorants, jacanas, herons, and buzzards, as well as several monkey species including howler monkeys, brown capuchins, and tamarins. With luck, we may even spot three-toed sloths and the elusive giant river otters, which can reach up to two meters in length and are critically endangered.
After the boat exploration, we will return to the lodge for a traditional lunch. In the evening, we will take a guided night walk to discover the rich nocturnal life of the jungle. This is a great opportunity to observe insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other creatures that are active after dark. Following the walk, we will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight rest.
DAY 4: Tambopata | Flight to Cusco
After an early breakfast at the lodge, we begin our journey back to Puerto Maldonado by motorized canoe. Along the way, enjoy the last glimpses of the rainforest and its rich wildlife.
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, we’ll head to the airport to board our flight to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, nestled high in the Andes.
Once in Cusco, you’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to rest and begin acclimatizing to the altitude. Take it easy as you settle in—perhaps enjoy a warm coca tea and a gentle stroll around the charming cobblestone streets of the city.
Overnight stay in Cusco.
DAY 5: Sacred Valley Journey – Weavers, Inca Marvels & Train to Machu Picchu
After breakfast, we’ll begin a full-day guided adventure through the Sacred Valley, starting with a visit to Chinchero, a charming Andean town known for its traditional textile art. Here, you’ll meet local weavers who will demonstrate ancient techniques of dyeing and weaving using natural fibers and plants. You’ll also have the chance to see alpacas up close and learn about their cultural significance.
Next, we’ll head to Moray, a fascinating archaeological site where the Incas created circular agricultural terraces believed to be an ancient agricultural laboratory. Then, continue to the stunning Maras Salt Mines, where thousands of shallow pools have been used to harvest salt since pre-Inca times. The dazzling white salt ponds against the backdrop of the mountains offer incredible photo opportunities.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the living Inca town of Ollantaytambo, where we’ll explore the majestic fortress and learn about its strategic importance during Inca times.
From Ollantaytambo, we’ll board a scenic train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Sit back and enjoy spectacular views of the Urubamba River and the cloud forest.
Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.
DAY 6: Discovering Machu Picchu – The Lost City of the Incas
After an early breakfast at the hotel, we’ll board one of the first buses up to the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Accompanied by a certified guide, you’ll explore the mystical citadel of Machu Picchu, delving into its history, architecture, and spiritual significance.
Walk among ancient temples, terraces, and ceremonial spaces as you learn how this spectacular site was built atop a mountain ridge, hidden from the world for centuries. Take your time to absorb the stunning panoramic views and take memorable photos.
After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore the site at your own pace or, if booked in advance, hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for a breathtaking bird’s-eye view.
In the afternoon, we’ll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have lunch and a bit of time to relax or shop for souvenirs. Then, board the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a private transfer to Cusco.
Overnight in Cusco.
DAY 7: Cusco – Free Day to Explore or Optional Excursions
Today is a free day in Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, giving you the chance to rest, explore the city at your own pace, or choose from a variety of optional guided tours.
You can visit the San Pedro Market, the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, or return to some of the impressive archaeological sites near the city, such as Q’enqo, Pukapukara, or Tipón. Another great option is a cooking class, where you’ll learn to prepare traditional Peruvian dishes.
If you’re traveling with children, you may enjoy a visit to Planetarium Cusco, ChocoMuseo, or the Inka Museum, all of which offer fun and educational experiences.
