DAY 1: Cusco (3,300 m.a.s.l.) – Cloud Forest (1,700 m.a.s.l.) – Pilcopata Lodge (690 m.a.s.l.)
Cusco (3,300 m.a.s.l.) – Cloud Forest (1,700 m.a.s.l.) – Pilcopata Lodge (690 m.a.s.l.)
Your Amazon adventure begins early in the morning as we depart from Cusco in our private vehicle. As we journey through scenic Andean valleys and traditional Quechua villages, we will stop to visit the pre-Incan tombs of the Lupaca culture.
Next, we’ll visit Paucartambo, a charming colonial town, where you’ll enjoy breakfast and have time to explore its small museum and historic streets. Our journey continues as we descend into the lush cloud forest, a biodiversity hotspot teeming with wildlife. Keep your eyes open for the spectacled bear and the vibrant Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird known for its mesmerizing courtship displays. You’ll also see stunning orchids, bromeliads, and ferns along the way.
We’ll stop for lunch amidst the cloud forest and then continue until we reach Pilcopata Lodge. Dinner will be served at the lodge, where we’ll spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon.
DAY 2: Pilcopata Lodge – Amazon Manu Lodge – Clay Lick – Zip Line – Machu Wasi Lake – Night Walk
After breakfast at the lodge, we travel by car to the river port of Atalaya. En route, we visit a coca leaf plantation, and optionally, a hummingbird garden. In Atalaya, we’ll provide rubber boots before boarding our motorized canoe for a 40-minute ride down the Alto Madre de Dios River to reach the Amazon Manu Lodge.
After settling in or enjoying a refreshing dip in the river, you can opt to experience the zip line canopy adventure. Soar through the treetops and descend via a 20-meter rappel — a safe and thrilling way to admire the Amazon from above.
In the afternoon, we visit Machu Wasi Lake, navigating its calm waters on rustic rafts to spot the prehistoric hoatzin bird, capybaras, monkeys, and other wildlife. As dusk falls, we’ll embark on a night walk to search for exotic insects, amphibians, and the sounds of nocturnal creatures. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
DAY 3: Amazon Manu Lodge – Atalaya – Cusco
At sunrise, we head out by boat to visit a macaw clay lick, where parrots and macaws gather to eat mineral-rich clay that aids their digestion and detoxification. Species often spotted include the blue-headed parrot, white-eyed parakeet, and chestnut-fronted macaw.
After this vibrant wildlife display, we return to the lodge for breakfast, then take the boat back to Atalaya. From there, our private transport takes us on the return trip to Cusco. We’ll stop for lunch along the way and arrive in the city around 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
