Itinerary

DAY 1: Welcome to Cusco – Day at Leisure

Upon arrival at Cusco Airport, you will be greeted by our local representative and transferred to your hotel. Take the rest of the day to relax and acclimate to the altitude. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon exploring the charming streets of Cusco at your own pace or simply rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Start your day with hotel pickup from the historic center of Cusco. Our first stop will be the Coricancha (Temple of the Sun), where you’ll witness a fascinating blend of Inca and Spanish architecture — perfectly polished Inca stone walls beneath a colonial church.

Next, we’ll drive up to the Cristo Blanco Viewpoint, a panoramic spot that offers sweeping views of Cusco. From there, we continue to the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuamán, where enormous stone blocks weighing up to 40 tons are perfectly fitted together without mortar. Your guide will explain the site’s significance before, during, and after the Spanish conquest — including its role in one of the largest battles between the Incas and Spaniards.

The tour then continues to Q’enqo, named “labyrinth” for its narrow, winding paths. Here, you’ll see an ancient ceremonial stone altar believed to have been the resting place of Inca Emperor Pachacútec.

Next, visit Puka Pukara (“Red Fortress”), a military post that once controlled access to the sacred city of Cusco. Just nearby is Tambomachay, the final stop, known for its finely crafted water fountains that showcase the Inca’s remarkable engineering skills.

We’ll pick you up from your hotel lobby between 7:00 and 7:30 AM and take you on a scenic drive from Cusco, passing by the fascinating Inca sites of Sacsayhuamán and Puka Pukara.

Our first stop will be at Taray Viewpoint, where you can snap some beautiful photos of the breathtaking Sacred Valley. Then, we’ll head to the stunning Pisac Inca Site. Here, you’ll wander through ancient temples, homes, and water channels, while learning about the clever agricultural techniques the Incas used all with amazing valley views around you.

After the ruins, we’ll visit the lively village of Pisac, where you can mingle with the locals and explore the colorful traditional market filled with handmade crafts and souvenirs.

Next, we’ll drive to Urubamba town for a tasty buffet lunch, giving you a chance to relax and refuel.

In the afternoon, the adventure continues to Ollantaytambo, a remarkable Inca fortress with impressive stonework — including a rock formation said to represent the Inca god Wiracocha.

Finally, we’ll take you to your hotel in Ollantaytambo town, where you can settle in and enjoy the rest of your day at your own pace.

Your unforgettable Machu Picchu adventure begins early with a transfer from your hotel in Ollantaytambo to the train station. Enjoy a scenic two-hour train journey to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of snow-capped Andean peaks and charming highland villages along the way. Upon arrival, our representative will meet you and escort you to the bus terminal for a 25-minute ride up to the entrance of the Machu Picchu citadel. Here, you’ll join a guided two-hour tour, discovering the fascinating history and mysteries of this incredible Inca site.

After the tour, you’ll have some free time to explore Machu Picchu at your own pace, soaking in the breathtaking views and capturing unforgettable photos. When you’re ready, we’ll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, where you can relax and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (not included). Take some time to wander through the town and soak up its relaxed atmosphere.

In the afternoon, you’ll board the train back to Ollantaytambo. Our representative will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco, where you’re expected to arrive around 9:30 PM.

Enjoy a full day at your own pace to explore the wonders of Cusco. Here are some great ways to spend your free day:

    • Explore Cusco’s Historic Center: Spend time at the beautiful Plaza de Armas, surrounded by colonial architecture and the impressive Cusco Cathedral. Visit nearby museums like the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (MAP) to dive into the rich history and culture of the region.
    • Sample Local Cuisine:
Treat yourself to delicious Peruvian dishes such as alpaca steak, lomo saltado (stir-fried beef), or causa (a layered potato dish). Don’t forget to try coca tea, a traditional remedy to help with the altitude.
  • Visit Museums: Besides MAP, consider visiting the Inka Museum or the Chocolate Museum, each offering unique insights into the area’s history and culture.
  • Experience Local Festivals and Events: Depending on the time of year, you might be lucky enough to witness colorful traditional festivals like Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) in June or Corpus Christi in May or June.
  • Relax and Enjoy the Atmosphere: Take time to wander through Cusco’s charming cobblestone streets, admire its colonial buildings, and soak up the vibrant energy of this ancient Andean city.
  • Explore Local Markets: Discover vibrant market stalls filled with colorful fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see and taste authentic Peruvian ingredients.

After breakfast at your hotel, we’ll pick you up in Cusco around 7:30 AM to start our journey to the charming town of Chinchero. The drive, about an hour long, offers breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, sprawling cornfields, and picturesque mountain villages.

Upon arrival in Chinchero, you’ll have a unique opportunity to witness a demonstration of traditional handmade textiles by local women — true masters of this ancient craft using natural dyes passed down through generations.

Next, we’ll continue to Moray, where you’ll be captivated by its extraordinary circular terraces, often likened to an amphitheater. In reality, Moray served as a large Inca agricultural laboratory. Your guide will share the fascinating history of this remarkable site, giving you plenty of time to explore and take photos.

Just 3 km away are the Salineras de Maras (Salt Mines). With over 3,000 salt pools filled daily by groundwater, this surreal landscape offers stunning photo opportunities.

After a morning full of discovery, we’ll enjoy a private picnic in the peaceful surroundings of Maras, surrounded by the breathtaking Andean scenery. Delight in a variety of delicious dishes tailored to your preferences — a perfect moment to relax and recharge.

Finally, we’ll return to Cusco, concluding this memorable day.

At 8:30 AM, a Samex Tours Perú guide will pick you up from your hotel to begin your immersive walking tour through the historic heart of Cusco.
