Arequipa | Volcanoes Viewpoint | Chivay | Yanque Village | Condor Viewpoint
Your adventure begins early in the morning, around 3:30 AM, with hotel pick-up in Arequipa. Travel through the scenic Andean highlands as the sun rises, revealing dramatic mountain landscapes and breathtaking valleys.
Pata Wasi & Volcanoes Viewpoint
Our first stop is in the small Andean village of Pata Wasi, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Chachani and Misti volcanoes and learn about unique geological rock formations. To help acclimatize to the altitude, we’ll also enjoy a warm cup of traditional coca tea.
We’ll continue ascending to over 4,900 meters (16,000 feet) to reach the Mirador de los Volcanes, a stunning lookout with unobstructed views of snowcapped volcanoes and vast puna landscapes.
Chivay & Breakfast
As we descend toward Chivay (3,600 m / 12,000 ft), you’ll see the colorful agricultural terraces that blanket the hillsides—some dating back to the Inca period. Upon arrival, we’ll stop for a nourishing breakfast to fuel the next leg of the journey.
Cruz del Cóndor Viewpoint
Arriving around 8:00 AM, we reach the iconic Cruz del Cóndor, the best place to observe the majestic Andean condors as they glide on thermal currents rising from the canyon floor. These incredible birds have wingspans of over 3 meters (10 feet) and are often seen soaring close to the lookout, providing awe-inspiring photo opportunities.
After admiring this natural spectacle, enjoy a 45-minute guided hike along the canyon’s rim for stunning views and cultural insights.
Colca Valley Viewpoints
On our return to Chivay, we’ll stop at several scenic viewpoints, including:
- Pinchollo & Antahuilque Viewpoint: Featuring 1,500-year-old Inca terraces shaped like a natural amphitheater and beautiful mountain lagoons.
- Choquetico Viewpoint: Home to the hanging tombs of the Collaguas people and the fascinating lithomaqueta, a carved stone map of the Colca Valley’s ancient irrigation system.
Maca & Yanque Villages
We’ll continue to the quaint village of Maca, located at the base of the Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca volcanoes, followed by a visit to Yanque, known for its colonial church, cultural museum, and nearby hot springs.
