Itinerary
DAY 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis Hot Springs
Our Ausangate trekking adventure to Apu Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 am. We will drive for approximately 4 hours through the Urco Pass, located in the southern part of Cusco, admiring spectacular views of valleys, farming terraces, and snow-capped peaks along the way.
We will stop for a delicious lunch in the traditional village of Tinki (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) before continuing our journey through scenic highland landscapes filled with grazing alpacas and llamas.
After passing the Upis Pass (4,435 m / 14,550 ft), we arrive at the Upis Hot Springs, beautifully nestled at the foot of the Ausangate glacier. Here, we set up camp and enjoy a well-deserved rest in the natural thermal pools, surrounded by panoramic views of the Andes.
In the evening, a freshly prepared dinner will be served by our local cook. We spend the night at the campsite, resting under a sky full of stars.

DAY 2: Upis – Arapa Pass – Ausangate Lake – Pukacocha Camp
We begin the day early with a warm cup of coca tea or coffee, followed by a nourishing breakfast shared with the team, all while surrounded by breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks.
We then start our trek across the high Andes, ascending gradually toward the Arapa Pass (4,850 m / 15,912 ft). Along the way, we may be fortunate enough to spot Andean condors soaring overhead, while our local guide shares insights about the region’s unique flora, fauna, and the spiritual significance of Apu Ausangate.
After reaching the pass, we begin our descent toward the stunning Ausangate Lake (4,650 m / 15,256 ft), nestled between rugged peaks and forests of queuña trees (Polylepis racemosa)—one of the world’s highest-growing tree species. This peaceful lake reflects the surrounding mountains, creating a truly magical setting.
We continue a short distance further to reach our campsite near Pukacocha Lagoon, where we are welcomed with a light afternoon snack. You’ll have time to rest and take in the serene beauty of the Andean landscape before enjoying a freshly prepared dinner under the stars.

DAY 3: Pucacocha – Anantapata – Red Valley & Rainbow Mountain
After a hearty breakfast, we resume our high-altitude trek, gradually ascending toward the Abra Puca Pass (4,870 m / 15,978 ft). Along the way, we pass shimmering turquoise lakes and enjoy impressive views of Apu Ausangate, the sacred guardian of the Vilcanota range.
Our expert guide will share insights into the mythology and importance of Apu Ausangate—the fourth highest peak in Peru at 6,372 m / 20,905 ft—revered by local Quechua communities as the powerful provider and spiritual protector of the Cusco region.
From here, we continue along a scenic trail overlooking the vast Chilca Valley and gradually descend for approximately 2 hours until we reach Anantapata (4,400 m / 14,435 ft). After a well-earned lunch and rest, we begin our next ascent toward Pitumarca Pass (5,050 m / 16,570 ft).
Following a brief descent of 20 minutes, we arrive at Lake Yanacocha, a tranquil setting surrounded by stunning Andean terrain. Here we set up camp and rest briefly before embarking on a short but unforgettable hike to Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley. The early evening light paints the layered hills in surreal colors, offering a quieter and more peaceful experience than the typical morning crowds.
After taking in the dramatic views and colors, we return to our camp for dinner and a well-deserved rest under the stars.

Our final day begins early, with a wake-up call at 4:30 am and a warm breakfast to prepare us for a spectacular morning. We’ll return to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) to witness the magical sunrise casting golden light across the multicolored slopes—a truly unforgettable sight.
With the guidance of your expert local guide, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the geology, cultural significance, and myths surrounding this unique mountain landscape.
From there, we begin our descent into the awe-inspiring Red Valley, a secluded and lesser-visited area that offers equally breathtaking views and a tranquil atmosphere far from the usual crowds. The deep crimson hues of the valley contrast beautifully with the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota range.
We’ll continue hiking downhill for approximately 1 hour, passing by traditional Andean homes, grazing alpacas, and native flora until we reach the final viewpoint. Here, we’ll enjoy a last moment of reflection and appreciation for the journey.
After our final lunch together, we meet our private transportation for the 4-hour drive back to Cusco. Upon arrival, we’ll drop you off at your hotel, marking the end of this unforgettable four-day adventure through the heart of the Andes.
