Itinerary
DAY 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Jungle Hike and Monkey Island
Upon your arrival at the airport or bus station, you will be welcomed and transferred to the Monte Amazonico Lodge office for an important briefing about the tour. From there, we will head to the port and embark on a one-hour boat ride to our lodge, where a refreshing local fruit juice will be waiting for you. After settling into your room, we will take a two-hour guided hike through the dense tropical rainforest, accompanied by an expert local guide.
During the hike, you will discover a rich variety of flora, including towering trees that are more than 500 years old. You will also have the chance to observe wildlife such as toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. This immersive experience takes place within the Tambopata National Reserve, which protects 278,000 hectares of pristine rainforest under Peruvian law.
After lunch, we will visit Monkey Island, located across the Madre de Dios River from the lodge. Here, you may spot several monkey species including the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, saddle-back tamarin, and white capuchin.
Later in the evening, we will take a night boat excursion along the riverbanks in search of nocturnal wildlife, including caimans and, with luck, the capybara—the world’s largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilograms. A flashlight is recommended for this activity. After the excursion, we will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 2: Lake Sandoval Exploration and Night Walk
After an early breakfast, we will take a short boat ride to the entrance of Lake Sandoval. After checking in at the control post, we will begin a 3-kilometer (approximately 2-mile) walk through the rainforest to reach the lake—one of the largest in the Tambopata National Reserve and home to piranhas.
Upon arrival, our guide will provide a rowing boat, and we will begin exploring the lake. As we glide through its calm waters, we will observe a wide variety of birds and monkeys, including hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, eagles, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and even sloths.
With a bit of luck, we may encounter a family of giant river otters, which can reach nearly two meters in length and are considered endangered. There is also the possibility of spotting the largest recorded alligator, measuring over four meters.
After the lake tour, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch. In the evening, we will venture into the forest on a night walk, offering the chance to see the incredible diversity of nocturnal life—including insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other creatures active after dark. After the walk, we return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
DAY 3: Canopy Walk and Return to the City
At 5:30 a.m., we will begin our final morning in the jungle with an unforgettable experience. The Canopy Walkway, elevated approximately 30 meters above the ground, offers a unique perspective of the rainforest from above. Walking across hanging bridges, we will enjoy panoramic views of the vast jungle and the Madre de Dios River.
From specially designed observation platforms, we will have the chance to spot a variety of bird species, including toucans and macaws, as they begin their early morning activities.
After this incredible experience, we will return to the lodge for breakfast. Shortly after, we will begin our return journey to the city, concluding our 3-day Amazon adventure.
