Itinerary
DAY 1: Arrival and Introduction to the Amazon Rainforest
Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, we will transfer you to the office of Monte Amazoníco Lodge for a final briefing on our tour before embarking on our adventure. If you have large luggage, we recommend repacking and storing any unnecessary items to ensure a comfortable trip. We will then take a 2-hour 4X4 wheeled truck transfer to reach the banks of the Tambopata River. Alternatively, if we travel by river, the journey will take over 6 hours (for information only). At this location, we will board a boat to the Monte Amazoníco – Tambopata Lodge. Upon arrival, we will welcome you with either breakfast or lunch depending on your arrival time. In the afternoon, we will embark on an introductory walk through the rainforest where you will have the opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat, including amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and a variety of insects, among others.
DAY 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Monkey Island – Night Caiman Safari
We will wake up early at 4:30 a.m. to begin our journey to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, the largest of its kind in the world. A 1.5-hour boat ride will take us along the Tambopata River, offering chances to spot wildlife such as capybaras, tapirs, and—if we are lucky—even jaguars, which some of our previous visitors have seen and photographed.
At the clay lick, we will witness an incredible natural show: hundreds of parrots and macaws gather at the exposed riverbank to consume clay. This behavior is essential for their diet, as the clay helps neutralize toxins found in some of the seeds and fruits they eat. From our observation spot, we will first see smaller parrot species arrive, followed by three types of macaws—vibrant red-and-green, blue-and-yellow, and scarlet macaws. On a good day, the sky fills with the sound and color of dozens to hundreds of these magnificent birds.
After enjoying breakfast in this unique setting, we will return by boat to Puerto Maldonado. From there, we’ll transfer to the Madre de Dios River port and embark on a one-hour boat ride to our next lodge, where a refreshing tropical juice will be waiting for us upon arrival.
Following check-in and lunch, we will visit Monkey Island, located just across the river. This protected area is home to several monkey species, including the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, and saddleback tamarin. Later in the evening, we will go on a guided night excursion along the riverbanks to search for white caimans, which are often seen on sandbars. Be sure to bring a flashlight—you may also spot nocturnal animals like the capybara, the largest rodent in the world. Afterward, we return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
DAY 3: Lake Sandoval Exploration – Night Walk in the Rainforest
After breakfast, we will begin a 3-kilometer walk through the dense rainforest to reach Lake Sandoval, one of the largest and most biodiverse lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. Upon arrival, we will board a paddle canoe to explore the lake’s calm waters and observe an impressive variety of wildlife.
During our excursion, we may encounter numerous bird species such as the hoatzin, cormorants, jacanas, herons, and buzzards, as well as several monkey species including howler monkeys, brown capuchins, and tamarins. With luck, we may even spot three-toed sloths and the elusive giant river otters, which can reach up to two meters in length and are critically endangered.
After the boat exploration, we will return to the lodge for a traditional lunch. In the evening, we will take a guided night walk to discover the rich nocturnal life of the jungle. This is a great opportunity to observe insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other creatures that are active after dark. Following the walk, we will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight rest.
DAY 4: Canopy Walkway & Return to Puerto Maldonado
At 5:30 a.m., we will begin an early morning walk through the rainforest, making our way to the canopy walkway, an elevated system of bridges and platforms located approximately 30 meters above the ground. From this unique vantage point, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River and the surrounding treetops, offering a different perspective of the jungle.
This is a prime opportunity to observe various bird species in their natural habitat, including toucans, macaws, tanagers, and orioles. The experience of walking above the forest canopy, with the sounds and sights of the Amazon awakening below, is truly unforgettable.
After the canopy experience, we will return to the lodge for breakfast, then prepare for our return journey to Puerto Maldonado, where you will be transferred to the airport or bus terminal, marking the end of our Amazon adventure.
